\I've been thinking about you a lot this summer (though I do during the school year as well) as I'm in the environment of music education at the Curtis Institute of Music. About two years ago, I really dove into orchestral listening, and I took some of your advice that stuck with me. A particular highlight has been my intense score-study and listening to Shostakovich's 7th Symphony. The piece is every bit as incredible as you described it to be - I have so much love for the first movement, just as you did. The rest, of course, is incredible. Shostakovich is a genius. Unbelievable.
I think about what you taught me all the time, in and outside music. Your teaching especially (and to a lesser extent, my horn professor in Iowa City) were my opportunity to develop working with and around ideas, and art - the world in which I work now as an Art History major at Princeton. I've been studying 20th century art, particularly that of the 70s and the 80s, and with it, the massive cultural shifts that characterized the time. The art of Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Gerhard Richter, and others - many gathered around the idea of a generation that was born into late-stage capitalism, as well as world that interfaces through images and mass reproduction. I think of you at least every other day, and I can't thank you enough for how you've changed my life, musically and otherwise.

"We have recently switched to Joe for lessons are very happy. He has introduced piano theory which is really helping my kids appreciate the music and understand notes and composition. He is equal parts patient and persistent and has a great way of encouraging the kids to play their best."

"Thanks, Joe. That means a lot from someone who has raised the children you have. I have to say we had no idea what Jarod had planned until we saw the completed picture. Thanks for all you have done to help shape him not only musically, but as a compassionate and thoughtful young man as you have shared insight and encouragement for him to fulfill his dreams."

"Thanks for your excellent teaching. I'm so impressed with Lars' progress but I find it even more valuable how well you treat kids and encourage them.
Thank you, thank you!"
